Sorry chaps but I have dared to have a bit of a break from the hamster wheel better known as racing as I start off on my new novel (best seller, probably not but I feel the need to give it a go), though I have kept my finger on the pulse despite ignoring all the negative racing stories for a change.
All I have for you today are three suggestions for Saturday afternoon no guarantees, but a little bit of fun for us all and maybe, just maybe there is a winner hiding in there somewhere.
Saturday Racing.
Not an easy day by any stretch of the imagination but you would have to think that with the Hobbs yard going as well as they are, Earth Lord could yet have a say in the ultra-competitive Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton. Very lightly raced for a contest of this magnitude, he has won both races this season at Wincanton and Ascot, despite making some jumping errors each time, with the last hurdle seemingly an issue for the six-year-old Mahler gelding. My hope is that as he gains in experience, his mistakes will start to disappear (wishful thinking, perhaps), and on just his sixth start over hurdles, I am really hopeful he has even more to offer this afternoon.
Our Jet travels North for the Skelton stable to Wetherby this afternoon for the opener, and if he can add to his better placed efforts, the maiden hurdle at 12.27pm. Second on his first start over hurdles at Aintree, he failed to build on that when fourth at Warwick, but he did lose a shoe that day and has had a wind operation since, which may see him back to his best. The drop back to two miles is interesting, and I expect him to be on the pace from the very start to make sure this does not turn in to a sprint up the home straight, and although no good thing, jockey Jack Andrews takes 5lb off his back, and if I was giving instructions they would be ¨point and shoot¨, just go for it from the start and see if you can come home without even seeing another horse.
A strange choice for our final bet this Saturday but when you hear something positive about a horse, it is close to impossible not to act on that information – rightly or wrongly. Kalelula has his first start of any kind in the mare´s only bumper that rounds off the Wetherby card. A daughter of Kalanisi out of a Sadler´s Wells mare, she is a half-sister to numerous winners both on the Flat and over hurdles, and may even be a bit of a bargain at just 20,000 pounds at the Goffs Summer Sales in 2020. Word is the O´Brien stable think she is pretty decent and although we all know in racing you should keep your ears closed and your eyes open, she could well run in to a place at least first time out before going on to better events over the years ahead.
Sean’s Suggestions:
Earth Lord each way 2.40pm Kempton Saturday
