One of my rare super short articles (some will be pleased to see) with no time for the pleasantries and gossip as it is my son’s 25th birthday this Friday (Happy Birthday Charlie), and family come first – so its a Sri Lankan breakfast (yes you read that correctly), and a day with the family before going out for a meal in the evening – hopefully you can all forgive me?
What I have done is put together a Lucky 15 for you all that may – or may not - pay dividends rather than leave you with nothing – and I’ll put an extra few quid on for me as well to try and recoup the cost of his presents!
Saturday racing
Some decent racing as you would expect this weekend and I have four horses that I genuinely feel have great chance of winning – so fingers crossed for us all. First up I am rather hoping the Gosdens may have a Group class horse hiding in a handicap in the shape of Covey, the winner of two in a row now after coming home second on his debut at Southwell, only beaten a neck. A son of Frankel out of an unraced Pivotal mare, he went on to score as he pleased at Newmarket and then Newcastle, he seems to be going from strength and with further improvement expected, a mark of 90 for his handicap debut may seriously underestimate his true abilities.

Anyone who watched Little Big Bear last season cannot have failed to be impressed with a year that rounded off with a seven-length romp in the Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh after four other successes. There was always a stamina question ahead of the mile of the 2000 Guineas where he ran no sort of race when pulling too hard before finishing last (and lame), but he is immediately switched to sprinting now and ought to be up to winning this with ease unless he has failed to train on at three.

At Goodwood I will be sticking with the Sir Michael Stoute team for my only bet when I am hoping that Crystal Estrella will be able to shrug off top-weight in the mile and a half handicap at 4.20pm when she tries the trip for the first time. She returned with a race full of promise when a head second at Brighton over a mile and a quarter, keeping on well close home. Lightly raced, I get the feeling we are yet to see the best of the daughter of Iffraaj who seems a late maturing sort, and if that is the case, she can go well here despite having to carry ten stone three in this competitive event.

One last one and Sioux Warrior runs at Chester this afternoon in the 2.55pm looking to get off the mark at the second attempt. On his debut on soft ground at Doncaster he ran on well over the minimum trip to finish a length and three-quarter second to favourite Ziggy’s Dream when keeping on well close home, suggesting the added furlong here should prove ideal. Better still, on breeding I am pretty convinced he will be better on the quicker going expected Saturday afternoon, and with improvement pretty much assured, it will take something above average to stop him getting off the mark.
