ALL VIEWS ARE MY OWN
I hate to brag but I am currently in Spain, but stuck in a basement and writing some new books to help everyone make more profits from their betting – so watch this space for launch details in the next few weeks! I have been keeping up to date with the world of horse racing, but as I am hoping to finish my work today in the hope that there is a paella and a beer with my name on it somewhere, I am not going to mess about with the “news” and will get straight down to business!
Saturday Racing
With less than two months to the greatest racing Festival on earth (Cheltenham obviously), its trials day this Saturday afternoon and how rude would I be if that wasn’t where I focussed the majority of my attentions?
12.05pm Cheltenham.
I am going against the grain here with Burdett Road all the rage in the early markets, but his hurdling needs to improve, and there is every chance that up against this field he could be rushed into making far too many errors. If that is the case, then Sir Gino looks the likeliest to take full advantage, and the French import did look like a machine when hacking up at Kempton on his first start for Nicky Henderson. He is held in very high regard at Seven Barrows and has allegedly schooled well since that run, and if he is as good as they hope, he could upset the applecart this afternoon.
1.50pm Cheltenham
My old pal Ahoy Senor is almost bound to hack up here if I oppose him, but there has been some support for him for the Stayers Hurdle in March, suggesting connections are at least considering switching him back to hurdles if he fails here. Paul Nicholls is hopeful he has a new star on his hands with Stay Away Fay, the winner of the Albert Bartlett over hurdles at Cheltenham last year, and unbeaten after two starts over fences. He still holds entries for the Gold Cup and the National Hunt chase so they clearly don’t see stamina as any issue, but his trainer reports he is far more likely to head to the Brown Advisory this year for those thinking about an antepost tickle. To even consider a novice for the Gold Cup shows you how highly they think of the seven-year-old, and it will be intriguing to see how his jumping holds up against these far more experienced rivals.
12.20pm Doncaster
One from elsewhere to end things with for this week, and Gordon Elliott’s Wodhooh looks a banker for the weekend ahead of the Listed Fillies’ Juvenile Hurdle that kicks off their card. The Irish are bringing a very strong team over for the meeting but she certainly looks one of their better horses after winning all four starts over hurdles since leaving Sir Michael Stoute for her new career. The good going predicted should suit the daughter of Dubawi admirably and allow her to use her speed when needed, and if she gets the run of the race, she is difficult to bet against.
Sean’s Suggestion:
Stay Away Fay 1.50pm Cheltenham
